Health & Safety Protocols MSF 2022 (dated December 29, 2021) along with Update:
There have been a lot of questions about transparency as we have been changing and updating our policies for the event. We want to provide an explanation and reasoning for that and that is provided below our updated policies. In order to be as transparent as possible in the updating of our health and safety protocols at Monterey Swingfest 2022, from now on this post will be the primary source for all information in regards to our protocol. This means that we will be editing and updating (with dates) this single post with explanations of our decision making.

Here are our new policies:
-MSF is a vaccine only event
-MSF is also requiring all attendees to wear a mask throughout the entire weekend
-MSF will also be requiring a negative PCR (within 48 hours prior to your checkin at the event) OR a rapid antigen test (brought by the attendee) and taken in front of a MSF staff member.

Health & Safety Protocols MSF 2022 (UPDATE: dated January 3, 2022):
The phone has been going crazy. People cannot find the Rapid Antigen tests available anywhere, locally or online, in time for the event. After verifying that tests have gotten that difficult to find, we next called our favorite Dancing Epidemiologist to ask what to do. His previous recommendations were based on what was available at that time. He said that while testing everyone would be the Gold Standard, a requirement of vaccination and masking everyone in the ballroom is reasonable, realistic and what the Lindy events do that he attends. If you have a Rapid Antigen test or find any, please feel free to self test at the event. We will also have a limited number of tests available and will test if anyone shows any symptoms.

Health & Safety Protocols MSF 2022 (dated December 29, 2021) continued:

For a more detailed account of how and why our policies have changed, please continue reading.

It was brought to our attention by Ben Morris that masks are required by the State of California for three out of the four days that we will be at Monterey Swingfest rather than the two that we anticipated. The date cited as the expiration date for the mask mandate (Jan 15th, 2021) was worded differently on two different state of California sites. One implied it lifted at the end of Friday while the other implied it lifted at the end of Saturday. We called the Covid-19 hotline and spoke with a state of California worker who clarified that it does not lift until the end of Saturday. We knew we would need to reevaluate our health and safety policies and decided to consult with several people in the dance and medical communities to help us determine our new policies that we have come up with.

Due to the uptick in cases, the clarification of the indoor mask mandate, and with the anticipation that the state of California and Governor Newsom will potentially extend the mask mandate, the committee has decided that masking will now be required throughout the entire weekend at Monterey Swingfest.

Originally at the beginning of December, Monterey Swingfest decided to add testing for Covid-19 to our vaccine only event. We then reached out to Dr. Dorry Segev asking for advice on our health and safety protocols. At the time that we discussed things, a vaccine only event with testing (either rapid or PCR) or masking with the vaccine requirement was enough. There was a miscommunication in having the booster as a substitute for either a test or a mask throughout the weekend, and once that was brought to our attention, we corrected and edited our requirements.

Covid-19 is rapidly changing and evolving and therefore, so did Dorry's requirements in creating the safest event. After the zoom presentation that Dorry gave on December 20th, there were a few things that we had to figure out.

Boosters: Although boosters were added as an updated safety requirement by Dorry, we felt that between the holidays, the availability of boosters for some people but not all depending on locations, people needing to allocate a couple of sick days when receiving the booster, and the timetable for people to acquire a booster and still have the mandatory two weeks before being fully boosted, was not a feasible requirement so soon to our event. We are, however, highly, highly encouraging boosters for all attendees, especially for those who have received Johnson and Johnson.

Mandatory masking: Prior to the state of California indoor mask mandate, we had been feeling an immense amount of pressure on the position of wearing masks at the event from both sides. We had people emailing, calling, and messaging us regularly advocating for or against mask wearing and we were trying to figure out how to balance these varying perspectives.

We apologize for not correcting the health and safety protocols that were posted stating Dorry's approval. After the zoom meeting, we spoke with Dorry again and removed his name from some of the posts, but had missed our website statement of the health and safety protocols. We were in the process of updating our health and safety protocols and missed key things, such as that, which have now been updated.

As we were trying to figure out whether to require masking, we found out about the State of California indoor mask mandate, which was set to expire in the middle of our event. We consulted with a variety of people in the dance and medical communities and decided to institute the mask mandate for the entire weekend.

In conclusion, here is again an updated, as of December 28th, 2021, health and safety protocol for Monterey Swingfest. Again, if any changes are to be made, we shall do so on this post and update with dates of changes.

So, as of December 28th, 2021
-MSF is a vaccine only event
-MSF is requiring all attendees to wear a mask throughout the entire weekend
-MSF will also be requiring a negative PCR (within 48 hours prior to your check in at the event) OR a rapid antigen test (brought by the attendee) and taken in front of a MSF staff member.

We understand that some events have published their health and safety protocols and have stuck with them. We have been trying to navigate a rapidly changing and evolving situation while we go into January and that is why we have been continually updating our policies. We hope this alleviates concerns people have posted and shared privately and publicly. If you do have more questions about our health and safety protocols, for the quickest response, please reach out to us at ccsd@thegrid.net or message us on Facebook via messenger.
